Candy and Your Smile

Two smiling women hugging each other.

October is the perfect time to discuss the effects of candy on your smile. This is the month that many neighborhoods are swarmed with costumes and countless bags of sticky, savory and highly-sugared treats. However, before you or your kids indulge in that candy loot, you should consider the consequence that it can have on your teeth.

We all know that candy contains high amounts of sugar. Unfortunately, that sugar begins its work the second it touches your teeth. The sucralose immediately latches onto your saliva, your teeth and any bacteria lingering in your mouth. Sucralose helps form a complex protein compound called glycoprotein. When Streptococcus mutans (bacteria) combine with these sugar compounds, they start producing harmful acids that can dissolve your tooth enamel. Therefore, not only is the sugar immediately triggering plaque formation, but they are also helping the process of enamel erosion, which ultimately leads to decay.

What Can You Do to Protect Your Smile?

As your trusted dentist, we must be realistic, and we certainly don’t want to bust your Halloween fun. Therefore, go ahead and enjoy that special savory treat – but follow a few tips to defend your smile health in the process:

  • Choose wisely – avoid hard, sticky and chewy candies and opt for chocolates or those that dissolve more easily in your mouth.
  • Rinse with water – if you can’t brush your teeth right away, at least have some water nearby to sip on after you consume your tasty treats.
  • Don’t graze – it is actually better for your teeth if you eat your candy all at once instead of nibbling on it throughout the day (or week).

To ensure your tasty indulgences haven’t already compromised your dental health, schedule a checkup and cleaning at Marietta Dental Professionals. We love helping you care for your smile – even during this sugar-laden October holiday.

Dr. Brown and Raquel at Marietta Dental Professionals are absolutely top-tier. Professional, honest, and they genuinely care about their patients. Dr. Brown explains everything clearly and makes sure you’re comfortable with the treatment plan, which builds a lot of trust. Raquel was incredibly kind and made the whole visit smooth and stress-free. The office is clean, organized, and runs efficiently. Coming back again for another wonderful and excellent review—I’m always in good hands with Dr. Amit and his team! Looks like I found a new dentistry home for my oral care. My previous dentist elsewhere retired so wanted to find a new home and I did just that. Very welcoming staff and environment. I felt very comfortable and safe in Dr. Amit care and his staff that took care of me. Very thorough and detail explanation of my care in which I appreciate it. From the X-ray visual/digital and seeing the before and after of my exam/cleaning was so cool. And the TVs are a plus. I watched Abbott Elementary during my time there lol. Great experience all around. Thanks Dr. Amit and Melissa! Highly recommend 10 stars ⭐️

I had an amazing experience with Sharon and Amit! From the moment I walked in, they made me feel comfortable and taken care of. They were both incredibly kind, patient, and professional throughout the entire visit. They explained everything clearly, checked in on me often, and made sure I was relaxed the whole time. Their attention to detail and genuine care really stood out. This was easily one of the best dental experiences I’ve ever had. I truly appreciate their work and highly recommend them to anyone looking for top-tier dental care.
