For many patients, the thought of going to the dentist isn’t pleasant. In fact, dental treatment can trigger anxiety and fear in both children and adults. At Marietta Dental Professionals, we not only understand dental anxiety, but we are equipped to address it. Our dentists are qualified to offer sedation dentistry, helping patients achieve a relaxed and rewarding dental visit despite their level of hesitation or fear. We offer both oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas). Sedation dentistry can be administered during a lengthy restorative procedure or just a simple cleaning. We never want dental anxiety to keep you from getting the valued dental care you need to stay healthy.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves the use of an oral medication or sedative pill. The recommended dosage should be taken before you arrive at the dental office. Sedative medication allows you to relax by slowing the action of the central nervous system. You will remain aware of your surroundings, but unbothered by external stimuli and less responsive to pain. If you choose this form of sedation, you must bring a friend of family member to drive you home after your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide
Marietta Dental Professionals also offers nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as “laughing gas.” This is an inhaled form of sedation requiring a small nosepiece that administers nitrous oxide gas. By gently breathing in this colorless gas, you can drift into a state of deep relaxation and remain comfortable throughout your treatment. While some patients go to sleep, most stay awake and are able to communicate with the dentist.
Nitrous oxide provides several highlighted benefits in terms of sedation dentistry. It is safe for both kids and adults, and it can be titrated to your comfort level. Most importantly, its effects diminish within minutes of removing the mask. This means that you won’t feel groggy the rest of the day, and you can safely drive yourself home.
